zero CO2

4th International Workshop Conference 2009

The 2009 conference, titled “CLIMATESMART Urban Design : zero CO2”, brought together a number of international planning and design professionals and academics from Sweden, Denmark and the United States. The overall objective of the arrangement was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge on issues concerning sustainable urban design and to showcase successful built examples from around the world. The conference consisted of several lectures followed by a twenty-four-hour workshop. The 190 participating students, from four different universities, were assigned into groups led by the conference speakers and specific worshopleaders.


This years workshop focused on the carbon neutral city. The carbon neutral city has become a shared vision to a sustainable world and the continuing development in cities must shift towards carbon neutral processes. Immense thought has been invested into this field over the recent years from technical solutions to utopian ideals. The realization of this new sensitive urban environment is a task requiring a combination of visionary schemes and grounded strategies. The workshop delve deep into a specific site in Lund and formulated a design solutions that could aid such a change. The event was sponsored by the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Sustainable Urban Design (Ax:Sud) at Lund university.
